New Blog: Read about Cynell’s Summer 2026 MBS Admin internship at Computershare on Bay St, Toronto! I'm open for full-time roles starting July 2027
During my internship as a Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) Administrator at Computershare, I bridged complex financial operations and technology-driven process efficiency. Coming into the role with an Honours in Business Technology Management, I expected to work with financial instruments, but I quickly discovered how heavily the industry relies on structured data management, system accuracy, and technical workflows.
My formal training in information systems provided the perfect foundation for navigating legacy systems and modern workflows. Tasks that once felt abstract in a classroom such as data mapping, terminal database queries, and system updates, became daily operational responsibilities:
Legacy Systems & Database Logic: Working directly with command-driven platforms required strict attention to detail and a strong grasp of data hierarchy. Navigating system menus to update loan ranges, deactivate child records, or adjust title holder codes mirrored the database administration principles I studied in my degree.
Workflow Automation & File Parsing: Applying technical problem-solving to high-volume intake files, such as extracting, sorting, and processing title documents across different regional channels like Ontario, Quebec, and other provinces demonstrated how business rules dictate IT architecture in real-time operations.
System Integration: Executing pool certifications via their ARC and CMHC portals reinforced how critical API integrations are to keeping financial reporting accurate and compliant.
Beyond terminal updates and file loads, the core of MBS administration relies on data reconciliation and risk mitigation. My analytical background allowed me to approach these complex tasks systematically:
Reconciliation & Auditing: Performing CMBS loan balance reconciliations between reports meant for identifying discrepancies, validating original mortgage proceeds, and auditing unpaid balances across complex spreadsheets.
Cross-Functional Verification: Cross-examining documents such as verifying legal forms for interest rate calculations, RAM, and face values which required the structured rigour taught in business analysis and system auditing courses.
This internship highlighted that modern corporate trust and structured finance rely on strong technical infrastructure. By applying IT principles such as structured data verification, workflow mapping, and system navigation to MBS administration, I was able to manage complex administrative lifecycles with accuracy and efficiency. Combining business acumen with technical execution proved to be my greatest asset, proving that technology isn't just a support tool in finance, it's the core engine driving operational success.
